Many people are surprised to learn that Los Angeles County has historically been one of the largest contributors to California’s death row population. The death penalty is a costly, decades-long process that has been shaped by documented racial disparities and the risk of irreversible mistakes.

Happy Juneteenth! We are honoring Freedom Day by reflecting on the legacy of resilience and hope in Black communities across Los Angeles County. Our offices will be closed on Friday, June 19th in observance of the holiday. Regular business hours will resume on Monday, June 22nd.

Recent efforts to revive the use of capital punishment are a stark reminder that the fight to save lives is more urgent than ever. It’s time to end the death penalty in California and build a future rooted in healing, accountability, and compassion.
