Check out this Tuscan-Style cantaloupe melon grown by .farms in Fresno, California! Super sweet and juicy, this melon makes for a perfect summertime snack. Notably the flesh of cantaloupe is denser than most other melons, making them easier to skewer and giving them a unique texture to add to fruit salads. Their California season concludes at the tail end of September so make sure to give them a try before fall comes in.

Showcasing Organic Baby Broccolini from from Mexico and California! Broccolini is actually a hybrid vegetable created in Japan in the 90s. They are a cross between broccoli and the Chinese vegetable g*i lan. This fusion allows broccolini to be grown in more locations than standard broccoli as it has higher heat resilience while still retaining most of the nutritional characteristics of broccoli such as high vitamin C, K, A, high fiber, and antioxidants.

Today’s item highlight are yellow potatoes from Edison California. Unlike typical russet potatoes, these have less starch and hold their shape better while cooking, making them ideal for roasting, mashing, soups, and scallop dishes. They are dense and creamy when mashed with an ability to soak up flavors well, but have a naturally buttery and sweet flavor.

Check out this mix of mushrooms from California, grown by . In the spread we have a bed of King Oyster, with White Beech, Bunashimeji, and Yellow Oyster in the back and Shiitake in the front. Unlike every other item we’ve featured mushrooms aren’t actually plants, they don’t photosynthesize and g*in energy from the sun and instead obtain nutrients by decomposing other organic matter. They are also known for containing lots of vitamin D and a significant amount of protein.

Fennel from Santa Maria California is in season now. Similarly to our last feature: brussels sprouts, fennel also originates from the mediterranean region. Interestingly it has antispasmodic properties that help relieve muscle spasms and flatulence and have been used as a digestive aid in India and Pakistan for many years alongside its many uses an both herb and vegetable.

Check out these hardy brussels sprouts from California! Though originally from the mediterranean region, they became widely cultivated around Brussels in Belgium in the 13th century given them their name. Many people recount brussels sprouts as being overly bitter as a child compared to today, which comes not only from children’s tastebuds having a lower tolerance for bitter flavors than adults, but also from the fact that since the 90s, many varieties have been genetically tweaked to become more widely palatable.

Showcasing even more California citrus! Lemons from Fresno are available year round as lemons always grow in warm idyllic climates. Aside from the many common cooking and baking uses for lemons they hold a unique place as a fruit as a cleaning agent due to the high citric acid in its juice. They also contain the terpene D-limonene which acts a natural degreaser and solvent and is used in many cleaning products, and adhesive removers.
