Deputy Thomas Pohlman was assigned to East Los Angeles Station at the time of his murder.
End of Watch Tuesday, April 18, 1978
Deputy Pohlman was on patrol when he smelled ether coming from a home. Believing there was a clandestine P*P manufacturing lab, he requested assistance. He and his backup officer began checking the perimeter of the home when one subject fled on foot from inside. Deputy Pohlman chased the subject and was able to capture him in the backyard of 3434 Whiteside Street. During the ensuing struggle, the subject was able to gain control of Deputy Pohlman’s revolver and shot him.
Deputy Pohlman died at the scene.
The suspect was apprehended, convicted of second degree murder, and sentenced to 11 years and 8 months on December 6, 1978.
Deputy Pohlman had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for four years. He was survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Deputy Pohlman continues to live on through the men and women that continue to serve East Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station.

East LA Detectives Request Public’s Assistance with Locating Robbery Suspect
Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department- East Los Angeles Station are requesting assistance with locating Quandrell Ivey, who has been identified as a robbery suspect. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at approximately 12:52 p.m., Suspect Ivey entered a business located on the 200 block of South Atlantic Boulevard and began removing food items from a display. Suspect Ivey bypassed the manned register and walked towards the door without attempting to pay for the items.
An employee attempted to stop Suspect Ivey from exiting the store. Suspect Ivey pushed the employee to the ground, rendering him unconscious and fled the location.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Suspect Ivey is described as a male Black adult, 37 years old, approximately 5’11,” 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is a known transient to the area of Hollywood, California.
