A stronger emergency response system starts with investing in the people who serve our communities.
Through Rockland County's Higher Education Recruitment & Retention Opportunities (H.E.R.R.O.) Program, more than $771,000 in tuition reimbursement has been awarded to 313 volunteer firefighters and EMS providers since 2023.
The program helps eligible volunteer first responders pursue higher education while continuing to serve the residents of Rockland County. Volunteers may be eligible to receive up to $6,000 annually in tuition reimbursement, helping reduce financial barriers while strengthening the future of emergency services.
Volunteer service changes lives. H.E.R.R.O. helps make that service more sustainable.

Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in Rockland County with a rate of 125.7 per 100,000 residents.
Those aren't just numbers. They're our neighbors, our family members, our community.
At Rockland Paramedics, we respond to cardiac emergencies regularly. But the work of protecting hearts doesn't start with a 911 call, it starts with awareness, regular checkups, and healthy habits.
Know your numbers. Talk to your doctor. And know that we're here if you need us.

Did you know that about 70% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home?
That means if someone near you goes into cardiac arrest, it's most likely someone you love like a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a child. Here's another stat that hits close to home: more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital every year. Nearly 40% are related to sports activity. Your child is your whole heart. Knowing CPR could save it.
Hands-Only CPR has just two steps: 1️⃣ Call 911 immediately 2️⃣ Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of a song around 100 BPM (yes, ""Stayin' Alive"" actually works).
This CPR & AED Awareness Week, we're asking Rockland: would you know what to do? Tag a parent, a coach, or a neighbor who should learn CPR. Visit heart.org/nation to find a training near you.

We are proud to announce that Rockland Paramedic Services has been awarded the American Heart Association Mission: LifeLine® Bronze Achievement Award. This is a national recognition for our commitment to delivering rapid, research-based care to patients experiencing heart attacks and strokes. 🏆
Cardiovascular diseases, including all types of heart disease and stroke, claim more lives in the U.S. each year than all forms of cancer and accidental deaths combined. That is not a statistic we take lightly. It is the reason our team has spent years investing in training, and improving quality of care and it is the reason this recognition means so much to us.
This award reflects the dedication of every paramedic, every dispatcher, and every member of our team who shows up every day committed to giving our patients the best possible chance of survival.

This week is National CPR & AED Awareness Week (June 1–7).
Every year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital in the United States and tragically, 90% are fatal. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or even triple a person's chance of survival.
The problem? Less than half of people who go into cardiac arrest in public receive CPR before help arrives and studies show that 65% of people would hesitate to step in during a medical emergency, often because they're not sure what to do. That's exactly why awareness matters. Knowing CPR doesn't require a medical degree. It requires preparation and the willingness to act.
This week, we're encouraging every Rockland County resident to consider getting trained because in an emergency, you may be the most important person in the room. Make this summer as safe as it is fun. Visit heart.org/nation to find CPR training resources near you.
Strong communities are prepared communities.
