Equal societies have stronger and more effective institutions.
Yesterday, I spoke with staff at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, alongside Padma Raman, Executive Director, Office for Women, about the links between our domestic and international work to progress gender equality and build fair, inclusive societies.
Australia is committed to this work, both at home and globally.

Australia and the United Kingdom are committed to tackling one of the fastest‑growing and most pervasive threats to gender equality: technology‑facilitated gender‑based violence.
The joint statement by Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper recognises that this is not just a gender equality issue but is a threat to national security that demands a coordinated response.
Together, we are committed to:
• driving international action to prevent and respond to technology‑facilitated gender-based violence
• holding perpetrators to account and supporting victim-survivors
• addressing the root causes of online misogyny, including harmful norms and disinformation.
Australia will continue to work with partners across our region and globally to ensure that digital spaces are safe, inclusive, and empowering for everyone.
Ending all forms of gender‑based violence - online and offline - is essential to building more secure, resilient, and equal societies.

More than 50,000 women vendors are improving their businesses, saving money and feeling safer in markets across the Pacific.
UN Women’s Markets for Change programme covers 26 markets in four countries—Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, making markets safe and helping grow businesses.
Visiting one of these markets in Fiji, I met confident women engaging in trade and earning an income to support their families.

On the International Day of UN Peacekeepers – 29 May – we recognize the service and dedication of women and men peacekeeping personnel from Asia and the Pacific.
Gender inclusion makes UN peacekeeping missions more effective in securing peace for all.
Through the new project, we will help prepare women peacekeepers from our region for future deployment to UN peacekeeping missions globally.

Couldn't help but be a little starstruck meeting Prof. Valerie Hudson who is one of the world’s leading voices on Women, Peace and Security.
We had a rich discussion on the growing body of evidence that gender equality is one of the strongest predictors of peace and how to better translate that insight into policy and operational frameworks.
A timely exchange on advancing peace, security and resilient societies through inclusion.
Thank you to Dr. Elise Stephenson GAICD and the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at The Australian National University for facilitating.

Australia is a trading nation with one of the world’s longest coastlines lines. Maritime is not just an industry for Australia, it is fundamental to who we are and how we connect to the world. Yet the image of a seafarer we’ve inherited from culture is almost always male.
Today, on International Day for Women in Maritime 2026, we celebrate the women rewriting that story and commit to the work still ahead.
Thank you Australian Maritime Safety Authority - AMSA, AMPI, WISTA and the Nautical Institute for bringing together professionals from across the maritime industry.
There is still work to do. But together, we continue to build an inclusive and stronger maritime industry for all.

Democracy is strongest when everyone is free to live with dignity, equality and without fear.
On the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Australia reaffirms, alongside the Equal Rights Coalition, that the fight for LGBTQIA+ equality is at the heart of democracy.
We remain committed to opposing discrimination, hate and exclusion, and to advancing equal rights for LGBTQIA+ people globally.
