She should still be here. Instead, she was taken from this world far too soon by someone who showed no regard for human life, committing an unspeakable act of violence that caused irreversible harm and should never have happened.
🚨 FEDERAL UPDATE IN THE CASSIE CARLI CASE 🚨
This is a step forward, but it does not bring her back.
A federal grand jury in Birmingham, Alabama, has indicted Marcus Spanevelo on a federal charge of kidnapping resulting in death in the case of Cassie Carli.
The indictment alleges that Cassie was kidnapped in March 2022 and that the events surrounding that kidnapping led to her death. If convicted, Spanevelo faces life in prison or the death penalty under federal law.
Cassie disappeared from Navarre Beach, Florida, following a custody exchange. Weeks later, her body was discovered buried in a shallow grave inside a barn in St. Clair County, Alabama. Prior to this federal indictment, he was already facing a felony charge related to abuse of a co**se.
But beyond the charges and court filings, this case is about a life that was stolen.
Cassie was a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and an incredible human being who was deeply loved. Her family has lived every day carrying the weight of her absence.
Following the indictment, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson reaffirmed that law enforcement will go wherever necessary and pursue every avenue to solve violent crimes. Cassie’s family shared that after more than a year filled with anxiety and waiting, they are finally able to breathe knowing meaningful accountability is moving forward.
