supports programing at The Park, the Louis Kahn-designed Memorial to President Roosevelt, on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, NYC. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park is the only memorial dedicated to the former President in his home state of New York. Kahn, an iconic architect of the 20th century. The Park celebrates the Four Freedoms, as pronounced in President Roosevelt’s famous January 6, 1941 State of the Union speech.

See how The Room came together! ✨
Kahn was appointed to design the park in 1973 to commemorate the life and work of President Roosevelt. To bring his design to life, we brought in 190 individual stones that make up the Room. 70 stones measure 6' x 6' x 12' and weigh 36 tons—that’s 79,366 pounds each. The "columns" in the Room were set with one-inch wide slots between each stone.
“I had this thought that a memorial should be a room and a garden.” said Louis Kahn about the FDR memorial in a lecture given at Pratt Institute. “I had this sense, you see, and the room wasn’t just architecture, but was an extension of self.”
More from Gina Pollara, the architect responsible for building the FDR Four Freedoms State Park: The only thing that I’ve ever been able to find that Kahn said specifically about the design is from a lecture that he gave at Pratt Institute in 1973.
And he said, I had this idea that the memorial should be a room and a garden.
Why a room and a garden? Because The Garden is sort of a gathering of nature, a personal control of nature. And The Room is the beginning of architecture.
Michael: So where does the garden end and where does the room begin?
Gina: Once you ascend the monumental stair, you are in the realm of The Garden. And then when you get down to the head, the idea is that Roosevelt welcomes you into what Kahn called The Room.

Out of Silence featured on Spectrum News NY1 Roger Clark. 🌳
Out of Silence, a sound installation by artist Hans Rosenstrom, is available on the hour, from 10 AM until 6 PM daily, except on Tuesdays when The Park is closed. Now through June 21, 2026!
Roger: If you're visiting the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Four Freedom State Park at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, and hear the linden trees speaking to you, trust me, you're not imagining things.
It's a site-specific voice-based sound installation from Finnish artist Hans Rosenström.
Hans: I always wanted to create something that also like asks for your attention and your attunement so that you would—especially slower beginning—that you kind of have to listen to your surroundings and find a relationship to it.
Roger: The installation, which features 14 speakers in the trees, is the result of a collaboration between Rosenström and independent curator Alina Girshovich, inspired by the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and the architecture of the Park, designed by Louis Kahn, who was also born in Estonia.
Alina: I realized that there's a lot of similarity and overlap in terms of how they approach each of their disciplines.
Roger: The Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis was also part of the collaboration. The piece runs around 14 minutes, and it's played on the hour, from 10 AM until 6 PM [ET] every day, except Tuesday, when The Park is closed.
Rosenström says, since he's not a musician or a composer, he did write text for the work.
Hans: It was important to work with people who know parts of music. Instead of giving them sheets. We went to the same room and we started to work on a soundscape together and just basically improvising and testing things, discussing the team.
Roger: The team hopes Out of Silence will provide a different tempo to the city's pulse through
public art.
Alina: To be able to just walk into a piece and to enjoy it, is what we're trying to do here.
