Happy Birthday to Alan Turing, who was born on this day in 1912.

Alan Turing introduced the concept of the universal computing machine, showing that a single machine could perform any computation that can be described by an algorithm. This idea became a foundational model for modern computer science and the design of programmable computers.

During World War II, Turing worked at Bletchley Park, where his contributions to cryptanalysis helped break the German Enigma cipher.

Today, Alan Turing’s legacy is reflected in the ACM A.M. Turing Award, which recognizes individuals who have made lasting and significant contributions to computing. Established in 1966, it is often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Computing." It is widely regarded as the field's highest distinction.

Happy Birthday, Vinton G. Cerf! Cerf received the 2004 with Robert E. Kahn for pioneering work on internetworking, including the design and implementation of the Internet's basic communications protocols, TCP/IP, and for inspired leadership in networking.

Vinton G. Cerf and Robert E. Kahn led the design and implementation of the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) that are the basis for the current internet. They formulated fundamental design principles of networking, specified TCP/IP to meet these requirements, prototyped TCP/IP, and coordinated several early TCP/IP implementations. Since then, they have continued to provide leadership in the networking research community and in the emerging industries of the internet and telecommunications. https://amturing.acm.org/award_winners/cerf_1083211.cfm

Happy Birthday to Konrad Zuse, who was born today in 1910.

Working in isolation in 1930s Germany, Konrad Zuse built the Z3, the world's first fully operational, programmable digital computer. Zuse used binary code for his hardware, a breakthrough at the time. He later created Plankalkül, the world's first high-level programming language.

Zuse proved that a machine could process abstract logic rather than just basic calculations. That shift from simple arithmetic to logic is exactly what separates a modern computer from a basic calculator.

Today’s smartphones and computers rely on the exact binary logic, floating-point arithmetic, and software-driven flexibility that Zuse independently engineered in his Z3 design.
