Before New York became a global stage for public art, Costantino Nivola was already leaving his mark on it.
After arriving in New York in 1939, the Sardinian artist began shaping a new idea of public art: sculpture that could live on walls, schools, plazas, and buildings, becoming part of the city itself.
That legacy is at the heart of “Tino | Nivola in America”, the 2021 volume by photographer Marco Anelli, published by Silvana Editoriale, which follows Nivola’s works across the United States through 80 black-and-white images, with a special focus on New York.
And the story is still moving. From November 2026 to February 2027, Triennale Milano will present “Costantino Nivola. Sand and Stone”, a major retrospective dedicated to his work across sculpture, architecture, design, and public space.
In the United States, Magazzino Italian Art helped bring new attention to this legacy with Nivola: Sandscapes in 2022, exploring his sandcasting technique and his dialogue with American modernism.
Today, visitors can also find one of Nivola’s sculptures permanently installed in Magazzino’s outdoor gardens.
From Sardinia to New York, Nivola’s art still lives in the spaces around us.
