Who knows NYC neighborhoods better than the young people who call them home? 🗽

NYC Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Renita Francois and Commissioner Ayesha Delany-Brumsey launched a citywide Listening Tour to close out the school year by discovering new ways to invest in young New Yorkers.

Our Neighborhood Safety Initiatives (Residents First) team partnered with the City to facilitate interactive activities where students from five high schools across the five boroughs mapped out what safety looks like on their streets and shared their own visions for summer programming. ☀️

Thank you to the Deputy Mayor for understanding that true safety starts with listening!

Swipe through to see the tour in action and how young people are already shaping a safer NYC for all of us. ➡️

Carrying a gun is often a consequence to deeply human struggles: fear, a lack of opportunity, and isolation. But what happens when we shift our responses from punishment to restoration?

Youth PACT, our gun diversion program based in Midtown Manhattan, aims to do just that. Pairing young people with case managers in their own community, Youth PACT helps them rebuild and strengthen their safety net with their parents, families, and closest supporters.

Hear directly from Joshua and Jenn, two of our case workers on the program, and one of our participants on how they’re reimagining their future. ☝️

Making a mark in Crown Heights. 🎨

Last week, our Neighbors in Action team unveiled two incredible new murals in St. John’s Park in Crown Heights, created in collaboration with Joel Bergner and Artolution.

Painted with and for the community, neighbors came out in the sun to celebrate the community’s creativity, share great food, and connect with local resources. ☀️

Huge thanks to Joel Bergner, Artolution, NYC Youth & Comm., NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Chalkbeat, and NYC Parks for stepping out with us to celebrate the community and spread the love this Gun Violence Awareness Month.

Make sure you go check out the new art this summer!

BBQ in the Bronx! ☀️

Our Bronx teams at , , and welcomed neighbors to their new location at 630 Jackson Ave yesterday, sharing good food, good fun, and even better connections.

And because it’s Game 2 tonight, spot how many Knicks logos you can see... (go New York, go!) 🏀

It’s summertime in Staten Island. ☀️

And that means more resource fairs! Our team hosted a fair to help 150+ neighbors connect with services, community organizations and city agencies all in one place.

Families had the chance to chat with legal services, check out library books from , get a fresh trim from the barbers at , all while the kids (and adults!) cooled down with some free ice cream. 🍦

Make sure you give us a follow to stay up to date with community justice events across the city this summer.

What if the key to solving the housing crisis lives right next door? ⬇️

In Syracuse and across the country, the housing crisis is damaging the health, safety, and cohesiveness of our communities. In the midst of these challenges, outreach teams with the Community Ambassadors program are supporting their neighbors in a unique way.

Over the past five years, Syracuse’s Community Ambassadors—many of whom are community members themselves—have worked to keep more than 1,100 of their neighbors safely housed. They do that by using their connections to serve as a bridge between tenants, landlords, homeowners, and city agencies amid widespread breakdowns in communication.

Five boroughs, one future, and THIRTY years of innovation! ✨

At an event celebrating our 30th anniversary, teams from across the Center for Justice Innovation shared what community safety looks like through FIVE interactive experiences.

⭐ Virtual Reality Adventure Therapy delivers an immersive, guided way for young people to process their experiences and thoughts in a different way to overcome obstacles.

⭐Architectural models—created in partnership with .architecture—showed one tangible way we work with residents across NYC to visualize the changes they want to make in their neighborhoods.

⭐A historical collection of artifacts showcased thirty years of learning, building, and sharing our Community Justice approach. Inspired by the venue !

⭐Displays of fashion, art, and music from Brooklyn and the Bronx! These programs give young people the opportunity for creativity and self-determination–the foundation of a healthy, prosperous future.

⭐The Bronx HOPE van prevents overdoses by bringing services directly to those in need, like snacks, water, and to-go “crisis bags” with hygiene supplies, fentanyl testing strips, and naloxone–a medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
