I am grateful to have been the commencement speaker for the incredible graduates of Bronx Health Science High School’s Class of 2026.

Looking out at our graduates is a reminder of how the potential within each of them- they are gardeners for the next generation- and they will grow with every win in their lives. As they move toward their bright futures, I hope they realize that life is a team sport- and success is possible by assembling a great team and always helping one another succeed in this game of life. Major thank you to Principal Sharoyan, the families, teachers, faculty, parents, and community members who came out to support the graduates. Congratulations, Class of 2026!

Happy Father’s Day to the fathers, grandfathers, father figures, and community fathers; all those who have served and been pillars of their families and communities. We see you, and we love you!

Today was full of celebration, laughter, and dancing, but most importantly, we reflected and remembered why today’s Freedom Day Rally exists. Our streets, privileges and very lives are due to the blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifices of all of those before us. I am thankful for every community member who came out in support, huge shout-out to Speaker Carl E. Heastie, Councilmember Kevin C. Riley, Music Over Violence, the legendary DJ Madout, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Congressmember Ritchie Torres, DA Darcel Clark, Bronx BP Vanessa L. Gibson, Assemblymember Landon Daïs and all of the incredible partners that make this important day happen year after year. Happy Juneteenth!

Imagine telling that kid who would wear that sweater everywhere that his favorite team would be the greatest playoff team ever. Led by the greatest small guard of a generation - someone not much bigger than me- and someone who kids can look up to in Jalen Brunson. We can talk about all the players of the past but damn it this is euphoric in this moment. For all the day ones and not the recents. For those who remember when Clyde was on the radio. For those who cried after the finger roll and suffered through bad drafts and worst signings. Thursday, we celebrate our New York Knicks 🏀 !!!

Celebrating three of my favorite things today in Mount Vernon- basketball(Knicks in 5!), community, and fatherhood.

Today we gathered the community together for a BRAG vs SNUG basketball game. The competition was hot, but the true victory lies in the amazing work these two organizations do to combat gun violence in our district. As well as highlighting our community partners, we also honored the fathers and mentors who lead our neighborhoods: Robert Richardson, Ralph Burts, Aaron Lewis, and Jeffrey Dixon. Shoutout to SUV, U.S. Rep. George Latimer, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard, Councilmember Cathlin B. Gleason, Commissioner of Recreation Dept. Kathleen Walker-Pinckney and all of the amazing partners for showing up and supporting us!

The Mall at Bay Plaza gives back to the community year after year, including their Bronx Entrepreneurship Scholarship Foundation Program. I am grateful to have presented three remarkable high school students with scholarship awards alongside Assemblymember Michael Benedetto. These recipients have shown significant aptitude for and dedication to both their education and public service. Congratulations to the 2026 scholarship recipients: Osaze Okungbowa, Alexangel Ventura, and Felicia White! You deserve this recognition and will go on to do amazing things. A huge shout out to The Mall at Bay Plaza team and P.C. Richard & Son for supporting these students in their bright futures.

Fatherhood is a cornerstone of a happy and healthy community, and Housing Solutions of New York (HSNY) is dedicated to ensuring fathers get the recognition they deserve! Thank you to HSNY for highlighting the importance of fatherhood ahead of Father’s Day at their Brothers Rebuilding in Community Block Party. Thank you so much for kicking us off, a special shout out to HSNY’s CEO, Seth Muraskin, Chief Program Officer, Dr. Xellex Rivera, Chief of Staff, Jerry Hyppolite, and the honoree, Ms. Chisholm, who do so much to support our fathers and community.
