Columbia Urban League summer program helps teens gain work experience, confidence 06/22/2026

"At first, I didn't even want to do it myself, but I realized at the end I would benefit from it, and I would get to meet more people and make more connections. Doing activities together made me more open to them, and I was able to relate to them and build that brotherhood relationship,” said Joshua Croffie.

Joshua gained hands-on work experience, built lifelong connections, and discovered a path toward a future in mechanical engineering through the Columbia Urban League's summer employment program. His story is a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people, we invest in stronger communities.

Read how one summer opportunity helped shape a young leader's future, and why programs like this matter now more than ever.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Juneteenth Rally at the Adam Clayton Powell Plaza in Harlem. Together with Until Freedom, we honored the legacy of freedom while recommitting ourselves to the ongoing fight for justice, voting rights, and economic empowerment.

Juneteenth is more than a commemoration, it’s a call to action. It’s a voice for the voiceless. We’re grateful to our partners, speakers, and community members who showed up and stood together for the people.

Happy Juneteenth!

On June 19, 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free.

Just as much as is a celebration of freedom, it’s also a call to action. The National Urban League stands on the frontlines of racial justice every day because freedom delayed is justice denied.

Let’s keep fighting to protect the freedom we’ve always deserved. ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏽

As we gather on this for barbecues, family gatherings, and celebrations, we are reminded that delay is not denial.

In the face of unprecedented assaults on our rights as Americans and the erasure of our history, including the administration’s decision to move Juneteenth and Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday from the federal park holiday calendar, it is our responsibility to those who waited for freedom to exercise ours.

That's the question bouncing through Black America right now. We’re continuing our fight for equity, opportunity, and justice for all in the face of attacks on our progress and freedoms.
