All Omaha Housing Authority offices will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, it could not be enforced in areas still under Confederate control. For many, June 19 marked the first day of freedom.
The years that followed, known as Reconstruction, were a time of both hope and challenge. Newly freed African Americans worked to reunite families, establish schools and businesses, participate in government, and build new opportunities for future generations.
Often referred to as America’s second Independence Day, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our nation’s history, honor the resilience and achievements of African Americans, and recognize the enduring importance of freedom, equality, and hope.
We encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about the history and significance of Juneteenth as we commemorate this important day.

In late May, some of our leaders had the opportunity to visit the We Make Omaha Future Lab. We appreciated taking this time to engage the lab and prioritize plans for Omaha’s future.

Last Wednesday, the Omaha Housing Authority was honored to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Chambers Court redevelopment alongside partner Hoppe Development!
We are grateful to Front Porch Investments, Nebraska Department of Economic Development, Nebraska Investment Finance Authority, Greater Omaha Chamber, and the many other community leaders, elected officials, and project partners who are making this multiphase rehab and new-construction housing project a reality for North Omaha.
We have every confidence that Hoppe Development will respect what Ernie Chambers Court has meant to this neighborhood and will take the vision even further, serving as a catalyst for broader neighborhood revitalization, economic opportunity, and long-term stability.
Thank you to everyone who has called Chambers Court home - past and present. It was our honor to serve you for the last 22 years.

Nothing beats taking time to appreciate the incredible people who make OHA what it is! 🎳🌺
Last Friday, we hosted our Employee Appreciation Bowling Event at Chops Bowling — complete with luau-inspired food, Hawaiian attire, plenty of laughs, and an afternoon dedicated to celebrating our amazing team.
Whether employees chose to bowl with coworkers, enjoy lunch together, or simply take a well-deserved afternoon off to kickstart the weekend, the goal was simple: say THANK YOU to the people who work hard every single day for our residents, families, and each other.
We are grateful for a team that brings dedication, compassion, and positivity to OHA every day — and we loved having the opportunity to spend some fun time together outside the office!
Mahalo to our incredible staff for all that you do! 🌸

At our Southside Terrace project, progress goes beyond construction, it’s about community impact.
This redevelopment includes the demolition of 16 existing buildings and the ground-up construction of 20 new buildings, bringing 113 much-needed residential housing units to the area.
In partnership with the Omaha Fire Department, our team is providing space at Southside Terrace for hands-on recruit training. Utilizing the existing structures, firefighters are gaining real-world experience through roof-cutting demonstrations and tactical exercises. It’s a strong example of how collaboration can strengthen both our communities and those who serve them.
