“The Florida Board of Governors is set to take up a proposal this week that could block some undocumented students from enrolling in certain selective state universities.

“Beginning with the 2027-28 academic year, a person who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible for initial enrollment in any state university which, for the two most recent academic years, did not admit all academically qualified applicants, except for cases in which applicants were rejected for non-academic reasons,” The proposal reads.

The proposal already has state lawmakers and advocates pushing back. State Representative Anna Eskamani, (D-Orlando) says, the board is going beyond its jurisdiction.

“It’s very disappointing to see the Board of Governors attempt to move forward a policy that the legislature did not even pursue. There have been bills filed in the past to ban undocumented students from being able to even attend our public universities and colleges. But those bills did not pass. So that is not the law. But now you have the Board of Governors and the Board of Education pursuing those changes through their rulemaking and executive powers,” said Eskamani.

Eskamani adds that she believes if the BOG decides to pass these policies, there will likely be legal challenges.“

Following the Sloth World controversy and tragedy, we have been working with the Sloth Institute () and the Sloth Conservation Foundation () on both a criminal probe and long-term policy change.

This latest announcement from FWC is a small but important win: moving forward, all entities properly permitted to own sloths will be required to obtain a Wildlife Importation Permit BEFORE importing sloth(s) into Florida. This will ensure that legally required facilities actually exist before sloths are brought into Florida.

Obviously, our desire is for a permanent ban on the importation of wild-caught sloths and stricter ownership criteria, but those requirements would require FWC rule changes, which have to go through formal public comment and a Commission vote.

It will take more time to reach those goals, but this change announced today to permits will go into effect immediately.

The work for animal welfare continues!

Today, the Orlando City Council will vote on a 3-year change to downtown's historic preservation rules. City officials say it could help bring older buildings back to life, while preservation advocates say it could weaken oversight of some of Orlando’s most recognizable historic properties and markers.

Re-lifting the letter we sent to the Mayor and Council two weeks ago, when this was first discussed.

Noting that the only response we received was: "We are in receipt of your letters."

Next week the Board of Education will be voting on rules to ban our Dreamers from attending public colleges, and now our Board of Governors will be doing the same for public universities at this week’s quarterly meeting hosted at FAU. Though not an outright ban, in practice it will become one.

Even the legislature did not pass laws doing this. Dreamers went to our high schools, they are top performing students who should be able to pursue higher education like anyone else.
