In the Arizona Senate on Thursday evening, a vote on the PFFAZ-supported bill, SB 1215, sponsored by Senator Kevin Payne (LD27), passed out of the Senate with an almost unanimous vote — one NO vote. This vital legislation now moves to the governor’s desk.
The bill strengthens presumptive cancer coverage and closes a loophole that had been exploited at the expense of Arizona firefighters. There have been numerous cases and news reports about this issue, highlighting the challenges firefighters face when their occupational cancer claims are denied, despite risking their lives and health for the communities they serve.
Thank you to the legislators and all the other supporters who have worked to close this loophole since 2021. This bill will save firefighters' lives and let them fight for their health, and not insurance companies over what is owed to them.

Thank you to the labor leaders from across Arizona that came to Tucson for your 2026 state convention. We covered a lot in the days we were there, but the work we do is important for the firefighters across Arizona who risk their lives for the communities they serve.

The 4th annual Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona Work Comp Technician-Level Class was a resounding success, with over 60 local leaders and department administrators from across the state in attendance for the two-day course. Attendees gained an extensive overview of navigating the industrial injury process. Supported by more than a dozen subject-matter experts and speakers who covered work‑comp law, PTSD and related topics, the Craig Tiger Act, federal PSOB program benefits, occupational cancers, 100 Club resources, and PSPRS disability benefits related to occupational injuries and cancers. The class aimed to train union officers and advocates of injured firefighters to operate at the “technician level” within the industrial injury process. Thank you to all who attended and gained valuable knowledge to help the firefighters of Arizona who risk their bodies and lives every day for the people of Arizona.
Special thanks to team member, PSPRS board member, and Captain, Brian Moore for his time and effort in putting this course together, truly making the fire service better than he found it.

Please register using the contact information on the flyer.
Politics is a year-round, full-contact sport. You are either affected by politics or affecting politics. In a right-to-work state, this is even more important when it comes to the political realm involving firefighters. Our team hosted our first-ever PFFA political training academy to help locals, both small and large, across Arizona become competitive in Arizona politics.
Thank you to the more than 30 local leaders from across the state for taking the time to help your local. This would not have been possible without the leadership of our president Dan Freiberg and Executive Vice President Tom Caretto. Special thanks to our instructors, PFFA Political Director Arick O’Hara, PFFA Fire District Representative David Rodriguez, Vice President of Political Affairs Tim Knobbe, and the many other instructors and subject-matter experts who contributed to the class. We are always available to help with any issues and look forward to the wins for the firefighters of Arizona.
Thank you to our sponsors NeP, Global Credit Union, and Herrera Arellano LLP.

The -supported Senate Bill, SB1216, sponsored by Senator Kevin Payne, was signed into law by Governor Hobbs. This bill eliminates the expiration of the Craig Tiger Act, ensuring continued access to critical mental health resources for public safety personnel exposed to traumatic incidents. The continuation of this bill will help many firefighters and emergency responders, as mental health remains a persistent and prevalent issue in the fire service.
