This is Part 3 of my series on Forward Deployed Engineers in 9-1-1. The first two posts covered the trend and the deployment problem. This one is about something harder to quantify: what good deployment actually feels like from the chair.
I've spent enough time around consoles to know there's a specific kind of distrust that builds when a new tool gets dropped into a center without anyone who understands the floor being part of the process. It's not resistance to technology. 9-1-1 professionals adapt to new tools constantly. It's resistance to tools that were clearly built and deployed by people who never had to use them under pressure.
The model, at its best, is the opposite of that. It's someone who sits with your team before changing anything. Who watches how your 9-1-1 call-takers actually triage during a high-volume stretch. Who understands that a single extra click or a half-second of UI lag isn't a minor inconvenience, it's a variable in a life-safety process.
That kind of deployment doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't happen remotely. It happens because someone made it their job to understand the PSAP/ECC Operations floor as well as they understand the technology.
As this role takes shape in our industry, I think this is the standard worth holding it to. Not "does the tool work," but "does the person responsible for it actually understand what's happening in your center at 3 AM."
That's the bar. I'd love to see our industry get there.

Hey Florida APCO 9-1-1 Directors, Supervisors, and Aspiring PSAP/ECC Leaders, a few questions for your consideration before our discussion this week:
Where should the line be drawn between AI assistance and 9-1-1 professional judgment in a live call?
How do you build trust in an tool when seconds matter and there's no time to double-check it?
Five years from now, what does a "normal" 9-1-1 shift look like with in the loop, and is your workforce ready for it?
Looking forward to doing a deep dive into these and many other questions on Wednesday afternoon this week. I hope you'll stop by and be a part of the conversation.
See you soon!
