If the outdoor vibe suddenly gets dramatic, check for mosquitoes 🦟

We’re wrapping up National Mosquito Control Awareness Week with a reminder of what you can do to help keep bites away.

Use EPA-registered repellent
Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk
Check window and door screens
Avoid areas with standing water when you can
Remove standing water around your home, like buckets, planters, or birdbaths
Small steps can make a big difference in preventing mosquito bites.

Video Description:
A person sits on an outdoor patio, appearing relaxed and enjoying the outdoors. Small, animated images of mosquitoes begin flying around them, and the person gradually becomes more annoyed, swatting at the air more frequently as the video escalates. Instrumental saxophone music plays in the background and steadily gets louder, matching the growing frustration. On-screen text reads: “When you're enjoying the outdoors and the saxophone keeps getting louder.”

National Mosquito Control Awareness Week is the perfect time to show mosquito surveillance in action.

Our Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Program leads the way in mosquito control. Each week, the team sets traps across the region to collect female mosquitoes, the ones that bite.

In Northern Nevada, there are about 30 different mosquito species, and each can carry different disease risks.

In the lab, mosquitoes are identified under a microscope, then sent to the Nevada Department of Agriculture for virus testing.

All of this helps us stay ahead of mosquito activity in our community.

Video Description:
NNPH staff are shown outdoors setting up mosquito traps in various locations throughout the community. Additional clips show staff collecting mosquitoes from the traps. The video then transitions to a laboratory, where mosquitoes are examined under a microscope to identify their species. On-screen text reads: “Trapping mosquitoes and IDing their species.” The song “Free Bird” by Moonlight plays in the background.

Corners don’t work in pools… and they don’t work in rooms either. Shared spaces = shared air.

Video Description:
Two people lie on inflatable pool floaties in a swimming pool while the piano intro of “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton plays. On-screen text reads: “Public Health Wisdom Pt. 1.” A second line of text reads: “Smoking in a crowded room is like peeing in a pool, you might do it in a corner, but everyone still ends up in it.”

PFAS, often called "forever chemicals," can make their way into groundwater and can't be detected by taste or smell. Testing is the only way to know if they're present in your water.

NNPH Well Testing Program is sampling eligible private residential wells in Washoe County for the presence of PFAS. Our team collects the samples, sends them to a lab for analysis, and shares the results with homeowners.

To learn more about PFAS or the Well Testing Program, visit our website at www.nnph.org/PFAS

Video Description: NNPH staff collect water samples from private residential wells in Washoe County. The video shows the sampling process, including collecting water from exterior faucets, transferring and securing samples, and storing them in a cooler.
