One of Rowan County's most important African American historic sites is the Dixonville Cemetery in Salisbury. Established in 1874 as the first city-owned cemetery for African Americans, it is one of the oldest African American burial grounds in the region and serves as a lasting reminder of the generations who helped build our community.

The cemetery is the final resting place of community leaders, educators, ministers, and residents whose stories helped shape Rowan County's history. Today, Dixonville stands as a place of remembrance, preservation, and reflection on the contributions of African Americans throughout our county.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor the resilience, achievements, and legacy of those who came before us and helped pave the way for future generations.
