April 29 is Denim Day. This day began after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction in 1999, because the justices felt that the survivor, who was wearing tight jeans, must have had to help her assailant take them off (implying consent).

The very next day, the Italian Parliament went to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the survivor.

Each year, we wear jeans on this day as a reminder that there is no excuse for sexual assault.

On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.

Wearing orange honors Hadiya and the people shot and killed every day in the United States, along with the hundreds more who are wounded and the countless others whose lives have been changed by gun violence. Wear Orange with us on June 6-8, 2025, to honor survivors and build community with those working to end gun violence. In 1999, an Italian court overturned a r**e conviction over the use of jeans. The defense argued that jeans are difficult to take off. Thus, the victim must have helped to take hers off and, in doing so, provided consent.

We wear denim today to raise awareness and remind others that clothing does not equal consent.
