Q: What are the rules for medical coverage benefits for eligible Tier 1 retirees?
A: This is an important question, and we understand there has been some confusion.
For eligible Tier 1 retirees, paid medical benefits are equal to the lowest cost medical plan available to active City employees. This may be a single, member plus spouse, or family medical plan.
If you choose to enroll in a plan that costs more than the lowest cost option, you are responsible for paying the difference in premium costs.
Please note: eligible Tier 1 retirees who reach age 65 must enroll in Medicare. Medicare becomes your primary coverage. The health benefit you receive through your San José pension becomes supplemental coverage.
This information applies to eligible Tier 1 retirees only. Tier 2 members have a different benefit structure.

This , let’s take a moment to appreciate the natural world around us: the trees that give us shade, the parks where we gather, and the clean air and water we all depend on.
Each small action helps build a healthier planet for generations to come. Plant something native, use less plastic, save water, walk when you can, or simply spend time outdoors with someone you love.
Together, we can care for the place we all call home.
