🎉The SJSU commencement ceremonies have concluded, but we aren't done celebrating our bright Spartans as they close this chapter of their SJSU journey.🤩
💌 Read the reflections of the Library Love Letter giveaway winner, 🎓Ashley Bonfoey, '26 Counseling and Guidance, of why she loves our King Library and what made it an essential part of her academic life.
🗣️"As a commuter graduate student who only had evening classes, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library quickly became one of the few buildings that I frequented and could point out on campus. My friends and I spent long hours reading textbooks, studying for tests, writing papers, and recording counseling sessions in these same study rooms, making the library one of my favorite places on campus to lock in and get work done. I appreciate how the SJSU library has the space to host a variety of events that are open to the community, with one of my favorites being the informative Trans Resource Fair hosted by TransTalk and SJSU."💙💛
🎙️"I hold a lot of nostalgia for this library, as I used to read picture books in the Children's Room when I was in elementary school, and it makes me happy to see families visiting this library alongside our student body." - said Ashley.
King Library is special for that reason 🫶! From picture books to textbooks, we are the gateway for future Spartans growing up and glowing up!💅
We are so happy to have been part of your journey and are excited to read your next chapter! Don't forget, the King Library is here for you beyond!🤗

📊Join information scientist, academic and SJSU King Library Data Librarian Dykee Gorrell for, "Reframing Data: Teaching Ethical Data Practices Centering the Experiences of Enslaved Africans and Their Descendants."💭
✏️Drawing on critical data studies, Black Studies, and archival recovery projects, the session will model activities that compel reflection on data provenance, power, and positionality.
💅Participants will examine how to design learning experiences that tether technical data management skills (metadata, documentation, storage) to ethical imperatives of representation, consent, and historical accountability.💯
Attendees will leave with new strategies that can be used to not only reflect on the past but shape our goals for the future.🤩

Congratulations to San José State University Director of Special Collections and Archives, Craig S. Simpson, for his newly published book, "Television Is Where You Find It" (Rutgers University Press 2026), a critical study examining feature filmmakers who worked in television between 1955 and 1990.
Through ten compelling case studies featuring directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Orson Welles, Ida Lupino, Melvin Van Peebles, and Martin Scorsese, Simpson explores how these filmmakers transformed the language of television through innovation, artistry, and cinematic vision.
Film scholar James Naremore praised the book as “a rare joy—informative, critically important, and pleasurable.”

You may recognize our graduating 📱Social Media Student Assistant, Debbie 26' Communication Studies from our social media page and events she's covered.📽️ Now, we cover her time here at our King Library.
"I've always wanted to work in a space where I can be creative but also collaborate with people I can bounce off ideas from! I feel like going from customer service and care giving jobs to social media was a huge jump but I felt absolutely welcomed and encouraged to explore with my ideas."🤔💭
Through all the content she's been a part of, there are definitely some that have resonated with her more than others. "One of my favorite reels that I collaborated on with Alex was on a trend I was really hoping to do and didn't think we would get around to was the 'We're the MLK Library, of course we have....' and it segued into some of the unique things I wanted to show of our library! Other ones I had a lot of fun collaborating on was our Halloween reel🎃 and one where we gave people a glimpse into some of Mel Chin's art that are scattered around our library! I hope people learned a lot from them and enjoyed watching the content as much as I had fun making them!"🤗
🎊Congratulations Debbie! Thank you for connecting current and former Spartans to what our King Library has to offer! We hope to see you around and we look forward to what's in store for you beyond!💙💛
