Zero Waste Innovations Grant Spotlight: Second Harvest of Silicon Valley
Second Harvest of Silicon Valley provides free hot meals and groceries at pick up locations to those who need it. They are using their grant funding to install cold storage units at San José community non-profits to extend the shelf life of recovered food from grocers, expand food recovery efforts, and prevent food waste. This will strengthen grocery rescue across the region and increase access to fresh, healthy food for families, seniors and children. Go to shfb.org/Get-Food/ for schedules and find a location near you.
Learn more about their organization, including donation and volunteer opportunities at shfb.org.
This program is funded by the City of San José Zero Waste Innovations Grant (ZWIG), which supports creative, community-driven solutions that reduce solid waste, while promoting sustainability and a circular economy. Learn more about the program and our grantees at SJEnvironment.org/ZWIGrants.

If you're a cyclist and have seen the reflective stickers on solid waste carts, we'd love to hear from you!
Take the survey at Bit.ly/Cart-Survey.
The Department of Transportation bike team has been working with our colleagues at San José Environmental Services on creative ways to keep trash carts out of the bike lanes.
One strategy uses reflective stickers, which both remind residents to keep their carts out of the bike lane and make the carts more visible to bicyclists. These stickers have been tested along six streets since last fall.
If you’re a bicyclist and have seen the stickers, we’d like to hear if they’re working for you. Please take a quick survey at bit.ly/cart-survey.
