Birds, science, and a whole lot of curiosity!

We loved welcoming students from the Suncoast Student Science Experience to Save Our Seabirds today! These bright individuals practiced observing and recording bird behaviors using ethograms before exploring the effects red tide can have on wild birds and coastal ecosystems.

What a fun morning with Suncoast Student Science Experience! SOS team members Lisa Wood, Jonathan Hande, and Tara Morningstar had a blast helping students track bird behavior through ethograms before diving into the impacts of red tide on wild birds.

Next up: the laboratory, where these bright students will continue investigating red tide through hands-on research and scientific discovery. We can't wait to see what they uncover over the rest of this incredible camp!

We're honored to participate in connecting students with environmental concerns happening right here in our community. Thank you to Roskamp Institute, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus for bringing this opportunity to life!

Check out "Laughing Gull Lager!" It's a new beer created by 3 Car Garage Brewing Company. A portion of every sale benefits Save Our Seabirds. Even more importantly, we hope this great beer for a great cause will raise awareness and create thousands of new friendships.

Longboat Key News recently ran a story with the attached photos - explaining that the beer has been a popular choice beside the pool at the Longboat Key Club and Resort since they began carrying it on tap this summer. (Link in comments)

Know of a bar or restaurant that would like to carry it? They can reach out to Ethan at https://craftfarmdistribution.com/

This little Black Skimmer should be spending its days tucked beneath the watchful eye of a parent on the beach. Instead, it’s in our avian hospital.

Oftentimes, people or pets run through resting and nesting flocks, delighting in the spectacle of hundreds of birds taking flight at once. It seems harmless - they’ll just go back, right?

Unfortunately, every disturbance comes at a cost, forcing birds from their nests and leaving eggs and chicks vulnerable to heat, predators, and separation from their parents. Too many disturbances can even cause breeding birds to abandon a site altogether.

How can people help? It’s as simple as giving nesting birds space, keeping pets away, and encouraging children to admire wildlife from a distance. You can also share this information with the beach-goers in your life so they can be informed, too.

A dramatic burst of wings may be beautiful to watch. But a chick growing up with its parents is even better.

We asked, and how lucky are we to have received! A heartfelt thank you to Karen with USF Sarasota-Manatee for answering our call for much-needed supplies.

Our baby birds in rehabilitation are loving their new safe space to soak up the sunshine and fresh air. Thank you for helping our youngest patients thrive!

Here we have two resident gulls, neither of which are seagulls.

That’s because there is no such thing as a seagull - at least not scientifically. The birds we commonly call seagulls are actually several different species of gull. They may not share a common name, but they do seem to share a mission: acquiring snacks from beachgoers by any means necessary.

Do you know what these two species of gulls are?

Thank you to Visit Sarasota County for the opportunity to host this month’s Partner Coffee at Save Our Seabirds.

It was a fun morning welcoming community partners to our campus, sharing a little about our mission, and introducing many first-time visitors to the birds that call SOS home. We appreciate everyone who joined us and are grateful to be part of a community that cares about the wildlife that make Sarasota special.

All attendees are now officially part of our flock!🪶

Our avian hospital is looking for some supplies to help carry us through baby season! We're looking for 3 kiddie pools that are roughly 4 feet across and 8 inches deep, and 2 portable playpacks. We are grateful to receive gently used or new items - any tears or cracks could present a danger to our birds in rehabilitation.

If you are interested in contributing one of these items, please comment on this post, or send us a direct message. Thank you!

Many North American bird species are assigned standardized alpha codes (often four letters) as shorthand in scientific and birding records. So, GReat EGrets are GREG. Alert the human Greg in your life of their bird counterpart! This nestling GREG is in need of a warm welcome to the Greg community - tag your Greg people!
