If your tomato bed is a tangle of cages by August, there's a simpler system that takes up less space and produces cleaner fruit 🍅

Single-stake pruning is what most small-scale growers and market farmers use instead of cages. One tall stake per plant, one main stem trained upward, and the side shoots removed weekly. The plant puts its energy into fewer but larger fruit, and the open structure lets air move through — which is how you avoid the fungal problems that start when leaves stay wet inside a dense cage.

It's not the only way to grow tomatoes. But for tight spacing and heavy production, it's hard to beat.

🌿 How to set it up:

- Drive a tall hardwood or metal stake deep into the ground next to each plant at transplant time — not after. The stake needs to be in place before roots spread

- As the plant grows, tie the main stem to the stake every several inches using stretchy plant tape or fabric strips in a figure-8 pattern — one loop around the stake, one around the stem. The crossover keeps the stem from rubbing against the stake, and the stretch gives room as the stem thickens. Twine or wire cuts into the stem as it grows, so avoid both

- Once a week, check the leaf joints along the main stem. Small shoots grow from every junction between a leaf branch and the main stem. Pinch these off while they're small — this is what keeps the plant focused on one vertical line instead of bushing out

- Leave the top of the plant growing. Only pinch the side shoots, not the growing tip — unless you want to cap the plant's height late in the season to ripen what's already set

🌱 Why this works in small beds:

- Plants trained to a single stem can be spaced much closer together than caged plants, which means more plants per row
- Fruit hangs at eye level instead of hiding inside a cage — picking is faster and you miss less
- Airflow between plants stays open, which keeps foliage drier and reduces the conditions that fungal diseases need to spread

One stake. One stem. A row that stays clean and productive all the way to frost 🌿
