πMeet Alma, a wonderful volunteer and smiling face in our Apple A Day Cafe! Get to know more about her below.
When did you start volunteering at the Food Bank?
I started to volunteer a year ago. I joined the team in the Cafe, loved my coworkers, loved the dynamic and culture of the Cafe and still happy to be a part of it.
What are your typical volunteer responsibilities?
I am in charge of front of the house serving coffee, hot water, milk, other beverages and oatmeal to my customers who can enjoy the morning with cup of coffee while they are waiting for their turn at Food Bank.
What is your favorite part about volunteering?
My favorite part about volunteering is talking to customers, make them feel seen and heard. I met so many wonderful people with amazing life stories. Also learning new skills from my partners at the Cafe, starting quality friendships.
Why should others volunteer at the Food Bank?
Other people should come volunteer at the Food Bank cause it's a nonjudgmental place. People can be who they are no matter their ethnic, cultural, racial and religious background. We all work together and want to be of use to those who need help.
What else do you want people to know about our Food Bank community?
The Food Bank is a good place to gain confidence and learn new skills. It's the place where a lot of people get help and these people are treated with kindness and respect. It's a perfect place to improve your life and the lives of others.
π It Takes a Hive. Volunteers like Alma are the heart of our work and help make a healthy, thriving community possible.

π Program Spotlight: University District Pantry
When most people think of University District Food Bank, they think of our pantry on Roosevelt Wayβand for good reason.
Each week, approximately 1,600 households shop our customer-choice pantry, selecting the foods that best meet their needs and preferences. From fresh produce and dairy to meat, pantry staples, and culturally familiar foods, our goal is to provide high-quality options that help households stretch their budgets and put nutritious meals on the table.
Behind every grocery cart is a household working hard to make ends meet, and behind every pantry shift is a community of volunteers, donors, and partners helping make this work possible.
Thank you for helping ensure our neighbors have access to the food they need. β€οΈ

π Did you know University District Food Bank is more than a food pantry?
Each week, more than 2,600 households access food and support through our University District pantry, Home Delivery Program, Satellite Pantries, Packs for Kids Program, Apple-a-Day CafΓ©, Community Connector services and Rooftop Roots Farm.
Every program exists for the same reason: to ensure our neighbors have access to nutritious food and the resources they need to navigate daily challenges.
Over the coming Mondays, we'll be sharing more about each of these programs and the impact they have throughout Northeast Seattle.
Thank you for being part of this community. β€οΈπ

Nihit was the kind of person who made the food bank feel like a true community. His warmth, kindness, and goofy sense of humor brought joy to so many people, especially within the tight-knit Tuesday evening volunteer crew. Whether welcoming new volunteers or laughing over some silly joke, Nihit made people feel included and cared for. He will be deeply missed by all of us at the University District Food Bank. π
For those who would like to gather in his honor, friends and volunteers will be meeting at Murphyβs on Friday at 7pm. If you have questions, please reach out to Max at [email protected].
If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available by calling or texting 988.
