Juneteenth is upon us and King County has long led on this recognition – back in 2020, we were the first local government in WA to make Juneteenth an official employee holiday, ahead of it becoming a federal holiday the following year. It’s a day to reflect, celebrate, and recommit to the work that remains toward full economic and social justice for the descendants of enslaved African Americans and there is no better way to do that than in community.
This year I’m excited to share that our neighbors in South Park are throwing a full Juneteenth celebration today at The Scene in South Park. We’re talking Double Dutch Divas, a community line dance with The Styles of Steppin’, live music from Zhanea June & the Mach X Band, and DJ Red Culture to keep the party going. It’s a celebration of liberation, and ALL are welcome.

Trying a food vendor? Look for the smiley-face food safety sign 😄🙂😕😐 – it means they’re permitted and following safe practices.
Good news: Food Safety Ratings are back online! Check any business before you go: kingcounty.gov/foodsafety/ratings

Without the reporters, their journalism, and hard work there is no Seattle Times. I stand in solidarity with the Seattle Times Union 🏔️ in their demands for a fair contract. Be it a reporter for the largest paper in the PNW or a hotel worker at one of our hotels hosting the world, one job should be enough! ✊🏽

Last Friday I voted yes on the King County Transportation District funding measure for unincorporated roads and I wanted to explain why. In White Center, residents feel the difference the moment they cross Roxbury. On Vashon, potholes and crumbling infrastructure are a constant reality. In Skyway, kids don’t have sidewalks to walk to school on. Traffic fatalities in unincorporated King County have been rising year over year, and the only governing body that can fix that infrastructure is us. This vote isn’t perfect – we need more progressive revenue tools and a transit measure to follow, but it’s a real step forward for communities that have waited far too long. The scarcity mentality has to stop. We can and must do both: invest in our roads and invest in transit.

For too long, communities in unincorporated King County areas, like White Center and Vashon-Murray Island, have faced roads and transportation infrastructure that continue to deteriorate, and the only governing body with direct ability to invest in unincorporated infrastructure is King County. Today’s action provides much needed relief for unincorporated roads, bikes lanes and sidewalks to be built on the horizon - and calls on King County to work on near-future complementary efforts create a Transit Package to add busses and transit services.
