The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) awarded Family Heritage Foundation a $5,000 grant to support its youth literacy program. This local grant is a part of more than $3.5 million recently awarded to nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools in Dollar General’s hometown communities across the country to help extend a brighter future for K-12 students.

We are grateful to the DGLF for providing us with this opportunity to build a strong literacy program in our community of English Learners.

Research shows that children who fail to read proficiently by the end of the third grade struggle in the later grades. They often drop out of school. Our literacy programs are tailored to elementary-aged children who are reading below grade level. Children who speak English as a second language struggle the most. We give them the tools they need to become strong readers, so they can excel in school and in life. DGLF responds to our community’s need for accessible educational materials and resources.

With the $5,000 grant from DGLF, we were able to purchase books, instructional materials, and learning software that adapts to each student’s level. We were also able to upgrade our computers to be compatible with the latest technology in adaptive learning software. All participating students are already making significant progress in reading fluency and comprehension.

This 4th grader met the challenge - 20 mixed multiplication problems in less than one minute. She went from finger counting to memorization in just a few weeks of instruction at our afterschool program.

It’s summer break! We are starting to collect school supplies for families in need. Education is so important, but the lack of necessary supplies can hinder a child’s progress in school. Would you be willing to place a backpack in the hand of a child this Fall? You would be making a positive contribution to the her/his academic success. Thank you in advance! See link in the comments.

Today, we enjoyed Pani Puri during ESL. Delicious comfort food on a chilly morning. Students come to learn English from us while we get to experience a taste of their culture.

Food Distribution Update and Prayer Request:
We got to serve families in Clarkston and pray over some needs. So many people showed up, we ran out of food. Thankfully, we will be able to purchase more food for the people who left without any.

Please pray for Esther who lost her daughter in a tragic hit-and-run accident. Esther is now raising her three grandchildren and could really use some aid. Please pray that God would provide and use us to support her family.

ESL classes in progress. We have English learners from Bhutan, Eritrea, Nepal and Syria. On the first day, we got to enjoy Nepali food with authentic chai. It’s a pleasure to build community with our students, while teaching them English as a second language.
