presents the Writing Workshops. All prompts are inspired by THE CITY WE BECAME by N.K. Jemisin. Join us on Tuesdays in June from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

Writing prompts:

Week 1: Character Study
Tuesday, June 2nd | 5:30PM
Participants create a character inspired by their borough or neighborhood. What would the Bronx sound like? Dress like? Fear? Protect? Great for character-building exercises.

Week 2: Flash Fiction
Tuesday, June 9th | 5:30PM
Choose the most compelling characters from your character study exercise and write a short scene featuring at least two characters. Build an environment around them, give the reader visuals to hang onto. Where are they? Why are they there? Is this a first-time meeting, or do these characters have history? Focus on their assigned character traits, get into their heads, and create a conversation.

Week 3: Short Memoir
Tuesday, June 16th | 5:30PM
Recall a memory or experience that feels quintessentially New York to you, something that could not have happened anywhere else. Give the reader the context, the year, describe the people, and set the scene. What about this story feels so specific to the city in which you live?

Week 4: Ode V.S. Elegy (Poetry)
Tuesday, June 23rd | 5:30PM
Think about how you are feeling at this moment about New York City. Nostalgic? Hope? A mix of both? Explore these feelings by writing either an elegy or an ode.
