The Corps of Engineers is known not only for its expertise in civil engineering but also for its long-standing drive to innovate based on research, development, and technological advancement. In the 19th century, Army Engineers built the first ever cast-iron bridge in the United States, a span designed for transportation that remains in use today. Which bridge is it?

Tulsa District leadership and staff recently visited the Chickasaw Nation Cultural center where they met with representatives of the Chickasaw Nation to learn more about the Nation's history, culture and values.

Meetings like this help strengthen our government-to-government relationship and provide a deeper understanding of the priorities and perspectives that help shape our partnerships.

Swimming in open water such as lakes and rivers is often much more challenging than swimming in a pool.

Waves, currents, cold water, fatigue and changing conditions can quickly exhaust even experienced swimmers.

Many people get into trouble by overestimating their abilities or underestimating the conditions, and even strong swimmers can drown.

Today we celebrate our 251st anniversary!

George Washington appointed the first engineer officers of the Army on June 16, 1775, during the American Revolution, and engineers have served in combat in all subsequent American wars. The Army established the Corps of Engineers as a separate, permanent branch on March 16, 1802, and gave the engineers responsibility for founding and operating the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Since then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has responded to changing defense requirements and played an integral part in the development of the country. Happy birthday to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Engineer Regiment, and thank you to all who have contributed to our efforts for the Nation.

From new hangars for the KC-46 to critical airfield paving projects, Tulsa District continues to deliver infrastructure that supports the nation's defense mission at Tinker AFB.

These projects provide facilities and infrastructure needed to maintain the KC-46. The KC-46 is replacing the KC-135. It is constructed on a Boeing 767 airframe and is taller, longer, and has a larger wingspan than the KC-135, necessitating new hangars and facilities for depot maintenance.

The work at Tinker is part of a broader military construction mission across the Tulsa District. The Tulsa District Military Construction section conducts project management initiatives from conception to construction and delivery for military customers at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma; Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; McAlester Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma and Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma.

Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies. It can happen with 30 seconds for children and 60 seconds for many adults, and often silently, even close to shore. Around 40% of drownings are witnessed. Most of the time others may be nearby but don’t realize someone is in trouble.

Learn the 4 signs of drowning - head back, mouth open, not yelling or calling for help, and arms slapping the water surface (not waving around). Most importantly, always wear a life jacket to avoid an accident becoming a tragedy.
