On June 19, 1865, enslaved Black people in Texas finally received the news that they were freeโtwo and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth as a powerful symbol of Black freedom and resistance.
At the Sierra Club, we know that the roots of the climate crisis lie in systemic racism and exploitation. We cannot fight for a safe and healthy planet without fighting for the safety and health of Black communities, who are disproportionately burdened by toxic pollution, extreme weather, and environmental racism.
The fight for environmental justice is inextricably linked to the fight for racial justice. True liberation means that everyone, regardless of race or zip code, has the right to breathe clean air, drink safe water, and thrive in a healthy environment.
Today, we honor the unique contributions of Black people to the struggle for justice and equity in the U.S. Letโs celebrate freedom, educate ourselves, and recommit to dismantling the systems of oppression that harm our communities and our planet. ๐โ๐พ

The Climate Dispatch is the official Sierra Club California podcast. Produced by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter in partnership with Stranded Astronaut Productions, the podcast discusses climate issues across the state of California. Each episode focuses on a particular concern impacting the state; plastic waste, housing, climate migration, and many more.
We deep dive into these topics with insights and testimonies from experts on the matter, and uplift local experiences, stories, wins, struggles. We will feature music from different artists to close out each episode.
