Every water entry should be intentional, controlled, and appropriate for the environment. Whether you're responding to a lake, river, flood, or surf incident, choosing the correct entry technique helps protect both the rescuer and the victim.

Before entering the water, ask yourself:
βœ… Is an entry even necessary?
βœ… Can the rescue be accomplished using Reach, Throw, Row, or Go?
βœ… What are the water conditions, current, depth, obstacles, and hazards?
βœ… Do I have the proper PPE and a backup plan?
Remember:
πŸ”Ή Never rush an entry without assessing the scene.
πŸ”Ή Maintain control of your equipment.
πŸ”Ή Protect your airway and maintain situational awareness.
πŸ”Ή A second victim helps no one.

Professional rescuers know that the safest rescue is often the one that avoids unnecessary exposure while still achieving the objective.
Train with purpose. Practice often. Rescue safely.

What water entry techniques do you train most frequentlyβ€”slide-in, stride jump, compact jump, or swiftwater entries? Let us know in the comments.

When conventional access isn't an option, elite teams rely on aerial insertion techniques to reach the mission.

From remote wilderness environments and flood zones to disaster areas and tactical operations, the ability to insert personnel quickly and safely can mean the difference between success and failure.

At the National Rescue & Response Institute (NRRI), our Aerial Insertion & Extraction programs prepare military personnel and first responders to operate confidently in complex environments. Training may include helicopter safety, short-haul operations, hoist procedures, helicopter emergency egress, landing zone operations, patient packaging considerations, and mission planning in austere conditions.

Train beyond the standard. Build teams that can respond where others can't.
