Former President Barack Obama’s $850 million Presidential Center is set to open on June 19, but the project continues to face criticism on multiple fronts.

Several Black-owned subcontractors have alleged they are still owed millions of dollars for work completed on the project. Some companies say cost overruns and payment disputes have created serious financial hardships, while ongoing lawsuits and legal battles continue to unfold. Project partners have pushed back on some of the claims, citing construction issues and normal closeout procedures.

The center has also drawn criticism over its design. Some religious commentators have argued that the building’s modern architectural style is unwelcoming or symbolic of broader cultural trends they oppose. Others have criticized what they describe as its imposing, brutalist appearance, while supporters argue the design is a bold and unique addition to Chicago’s skyline.

Despite the controversies, the Obama Foundation plans to move forward with the grand opening as scheduled.
