Q: What Does Down Payment Assistance Actually Do?

For many homebuyers, the biggest challenge is not the monthly payment but getting past the upfront costs. Here’s a simple example: A family buying a $300,000 home with an FHA loan may need about $10,500 for the down payment. Through Home in Five, eligible buyers may receive $15,000 in down payment assistance, which can help cover the down payment and some closing costs.

👉 That support can make a real difference for families who are ready for homeownership but need help getting through the front door.

Home in Five is a partnership established between the Phoenix IDA and the Maricopa IDA that has helped thousands of family achieve the American Dream since 2012. Learn more at homein5advantage.com/

HUD cuts are likely to deepen housing affordability challenges 06/15/2026

NALHFA Executive Director Jonathan Paine was recently interviewed by HousingWire on the U.S. House of Representatives’ proposed FY27 funding levels for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In the interview, Paine emphasized that cuts to rental assistance, affordable housing investment, and homelessness assistance programs would reduce communities’ ability to leverage public and private capital at a time when housing costs remain historically high.

“Congress should prioritize policies and investments that increase housing production, preserve existing affordable housing and provide local communities with flexible tools to address their unique housing challenges,” Paine said.
