The Syrian American Council welcomes the appointment of Ambassador Tom Barrack as Presidential Special Envoy to Syria and Iraq.
Ambassador Barrack has served as U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria since May 2025, overseeing sanctions easing, reconstruction efforts, and counter-ISIS cooperation during a pivotal moment in Syria’s transition. 
We applaud his work on the Syria file and are glad to see his commitment to Syria continue in this expanded role.
SAC looks forward to continued engagement with Ambassador Barrack and the administration
as Syria enters this defining new era.🇸🇾

This weekend, SAC President Farouk Belal and members of our staff joined community members in the Baltimore area for an Eid brunch and discussion with Syria’s Chargé d’Affaires Mohammad Kanatri and members of his team at a gathering hosted by Jay Salkini.
Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and hear updates on the reopening of Syria’s diplomatic mission in Washington, the return of consular services, current developments on the ground in Syria, ongoing economic challenges, recovery efforts, and the path forward.
The conversation reflected the strong desire of Syrian Americans to remain engaged. These are the conversations that help shape what comes next for Syria — and we will always be in the room 🇸🇾😎✌🏻
