So sad. Rest In Peace.
Gene Shalit, who appeared on the “Today” show for more than four decades as an arts editor and movie critic, has died at 100.
His punny reviews, puffy hair, and oversized handlebar mustache made “Critic’s Corner” a staple for viewers.
“What resonated above his unusual appearance was his incredible wit and remarkable intelligence. He didn’t pound you over the head with it. He amused you. He enlightened and amused whatever subject he was on,” Shalit’s producer Guy Ludwig wrote.
When Shalit left in 2010, he was one of the last high-profile critics on a major network.

The Weekly Village News for June 12, 2026!
From Frank Finamore (Executive Director of the Village Square at Cleveland & Woodley Park Village)
With the Village Square now open, I feel so much pride for what we’ve created. Just today, some folks gathered for an impromptu afternoon of ping pong and Boggle. The sight of folks eyeing the letters and silently writing down words brought me back to the 1970s when my father, sisters, and I huddled around our dining table playing the same game. My father, for whom I was named, was a fierce competitor and gave no ground to his young children. It was a dog-eat-dog world in those hours between when we finished our spaghetti and meatballs and before Wild Kingdom came on. Some of my sisters say that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, in that I was just as competitive as my father! I won’t say they’re wrong, but I digress from my main point. That is, there’s nothing like seeing people enjoying themselves. It warms my heart.....Read all about it here:
