An afternoon nature treat 🌱🌿 after the busy clinical rotations

Over the weekend, our participants had the privilege of spending time at the Baby Life Rescue Centre in Mombasa, sharing moments of joy, laughter, and play with the children at the centre.

Beyond clinical placements, experiences like these have become an integral part of our programs, fostering meaningful community engagement and cultural immersion—values that remain central to the Elective Africa mission.

Our Summer Program is currently underway, and applications remain open for upcoming summer and future intakes. To join us on this transformative journey, apply through the link in our bio or visit our website to learn more.

Imagine you are in our students' shoes. Reflect on this.
You are standing at the entrance of a ward for the first time. No script. No manual. Just you, watching the way the senior nurse moves, the way the consultant pauses before speaking, the way respect is given before anything clinical happens.
You came here for the cases. You didn't expect the real lessons to start in the corridor.
But that's where it begins.

Reflect on that.

What does safety actually look like on a clinical placement in Kenya?
It looks like this.
Infection control notices on every wall. Department guidelines followed without exception. Emergency procedures that every student knows before they set foot on the ward. A consultant briefing before every single round.
We ensure our students are never in an environment that cuts corners. The infrastructure is real, the protocols are enforced, and the standard never drops, because in a hospital, it can't.
This is what we mean when we say your safety is our responsibility.

Spoiler: yes, it's safe. But let us explain.

Mombasa isn't a remote clinic in the middle of nowhere. It's a city, with one of East Africa's most established referral hospitals — and every student on our programme has experienced, professional doctors with them from day one.
We're not coordinating this from a laptop somewhere. We're on the ground, and we've been here.

💬 Worried parents, curious students — drop your questions below. Nothing is off limits.

Every rotation is supervised by professional doctors who make sure you're learning the right things, the right way. But what stays with you at the end of the day? That's yours.

This is what day one looks like.

New country, new hospital, new way of working. Before the ward rounds and the case presentations, there's orientation — getting your bearings, meeting the team, and realising just how much you're about to learn.
Every step of the way, you're guided by experienced, professional doctors who know this environment inside out. You're in good hands.
It starts here.

Most people assume a global elective is mostly observation. It isn't.

Not observing from a distance. Actually in it.
A global elective means real ward rounds, real cases, and consultants who expect real answers. You're embedded in a working hospital — taking histories, presenting cases, and encountering conditions most graduates won't see for years.
It's not a CV box-tick. It's one of the most challenging things you'll do as a medical student.

Up for the challenge? Become a global health advocate?
