The journey to citizenship is rarely easy. It often requires years of paperwork, appointments, waiting, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. For many, it means building a new home while carrying the memories and traditions of another. And for some, despite their efforts, this milestone remains just beyond reach.

That’s why it was such an honor to attend the City of Elgin’s 26th Annual New Citizenship Recognition Ceremony and celebrate this moment. Congratulations to all of the new citizens recognized last night. Your resilience, contributions, and commitment to our community make Elgin stronger.

What a special afternoon in Aurora for the Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony.

On June 19, 1865, the promise of freedom finally reached enslaved Black Americans in Texas more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a day generations had hoped and prayed would come.

That hope endures today. As we honor the resilience of our Black communities, we must never stop fighting for advancing justice, equity, and true equality for all.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom must be made real through investment, opportunity, and collective action. As we honor this day, we celebrate the strength and resilience of Black communities and the importance of Black and Brown unity in building a more just and equitable future.
Our offices are closed today in observance of Juneteenth and will reopen on Monday, June 22.

The fight for a dignified existence begins with the ability to earn a livable wage and provide for our people. It was an honor to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Arise Chicago at their Faith and Labor Breakfast, recognizing their longstanding commitment to advancing workers’ rights. Together, we must continue building a future where every worker, regardless of status or income, is treated with dignity and respect.

While this is a step forward, our communities need a leap forward. My colleagues and I will continue organizing, advocating, and fighting to hold billionaires accountable and build an Illinois that works for working people, not just the wealthy few.

Happy first day of our summer internship! Today, our summer interns continued a tradition of working together to build spaghetti marshmallow towers.

We are excited to see everything that they will accomplish this summer. Stay tuned for their intro graphics this week!

On the 14th anniversary of DACA, I was honored to join Congresswoman Delia Ramirez and fellow congressional and elected leaders for an oversight hearing on the urgent need to create a pathway to citizenship.

I am grateful to the courageous witnesses who shared their stories—stories that reflect the experiences, resilience, and aspirations of thousands of Dreamers across Illinois. Their voices are a powerful reminder that the fight for permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship is far from over.
