In the early morning hours of June 20, 2026, West Sacramento Fire Department crews, alongside our partners at Davis Fire Department, successfully completed a high-angle rescue on the Eastbound Interstate 80 Causeway long bridge.
Firefighters accessed and treated an injured individual located below the bridge before initiating a coordinated technical rescue operation. Using specialized high-angle rescue equipment, personnel from Truck 45 and Davis Fire safely packaged and raised the patient back to the bridge deck.
The patient was then transferred to AMR personnel for continued care and transport to a local hospital.
This incident showcased the advanced rescue capabilities, training, and teamwork of both departments. We are proud of the professionalism displayed by all personnel involved and grateful for the strong interagency partnership that helped ensure a successful outcome.
All units cleared the scene without further incident. đźš’

On day 4 of our Youth Fire Academy braved the triple digit heat AND getting lowered down our 5-story tower today! A healthy amount of fear and anxiety was felt by these high schoolers, and Truck 45 gained their trust and guided them through the rope rescue evolution with ease.
Cadets worked through most of a bottle doing a mini STAR drill. They wore full firefighter gear (turnouts and SCBA), went on air then got to work hoisting hose, climbing ladders, using a sledgehammer, carrying saws, dragging dummies and putting in a huge amount of effort.
Cadets learned water rescue skills at West Sacramento’s Rec Center Pool, then enjoyed the water slides to beat the heat. Our YFA instructors brought cadets back to Station 45 to enjoy ice cream and talk them through their next steps to pursue a career in the fire service. These high schoolers are such a great group!

Day- 3
YFA 26-1 spent their morning at Station 45 with WSFD’s EMS instructors teaching CPR and basic first aid to our cadets.
Cadets competed against each other doing a hose relay and “mop bucket soccer” where they got to practice their hose unrolling/coupling skills and hose handling.
Cadets extinguished live fire with fire extinguishers and continued perfecting their SCBA and PPE for time evolutions. This group has really come together as a team to accomplish their common goals.

YFA 26-1 was out at WSFD’s Training Tower all day on Day 2. Cadets were introduced to ladders, flowing 1 3/4” and searching for victims. Cadets learned about donning and doffing PPE, wearing their SCBA, and worked on tying knots.
A big thank you to E45, T45 and BC45 for coming to the tower to perform a full speed structure fire evolution for cadets. Cadets were able to see how all the basic skills they’re learning this week coalesce seamlessly so that the West Sacramento Fire Department continues its tradition of utmost professionalism and customer service to our community.

West Sacramento Fire Department’s Youth Fire Academy is celebrating 10 years, with 10 academies led by Engineer Jen Almaguer, Engineer Ryan DePaepe and their incredible team of instructors.
We welcomed 20 cadets for the first day of Youth Fire Academy 26-1!
Team building starts Day 1; instructors and cadets introduce themselves to each other, and company leaders are selected. It’s remarkable how much trust and connection is built between our Youth Fire Academy instructors and cadets in just 1 week.
Cadets were welcomed by Fire Chief Steve Binns and Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cullison. They learned about the fire service, different types of calls and apparatus, and toured Station 45. Cadets were issued their PPE (personal protective equipment), learned basic knots, and fire hose basics.

Today is National Heatstroke Prevention Day
Every year, children are seriously injured or lose their lives from vehicular heatstroke, and it can happen faster than most people realize. Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dangerously within minutes.
Here’s how we can protect our kids:
• Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, not even for a minute
• Check the back seat every time you park, make it a habit
• Keep cars locked when not in use and store keys out of children’s reach
• Place a reminder item (like your phone, bag, or shoe) in the back seat
• Act fast! If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately
Heatstroke is preventable. Awareness saves lives.
