A recent criminal case about an armed robbery at the Walgreens on 22nd Street has reached a verdict.

A jury in Polk County found 32-year-old Bashir Omar Yussuf guilty of First-Degree Robbery. The case followed a thorough investigation led by Detective Ascheman, with help from the Polk County Attorney’s Office.

The robbery happened on November 15, 2025, when Yussuf followed a customer out of the store and threatened them with a gun before running away with cash. Investigators used surveillance footage, witness statements, and teamwork to find and arrest Yussuf on December 5, 2025. He was caught with the gun he used in the robbery.

Yussuf now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 12.5 years in prison before he can be considered for parole. His sentencing is set for July 31.

We appreciate the hard work of our officers, the investigation team, and the Polk County Attorney’s Office for bringing this case to a successful close. Our department is dedicated to keeping everyone in our community safe and secure.

Congratulations to Senior Police Officer Rob Weir, our West Des Moines Police Department Respect for Law honoree!

At yesterday's 16th annual Respect for Law program, Club President Melissa Sanders of Noon Optimist Club of Western Des Moines presented Officer Weir with his certificate of recognition, and Project Chair Janet Lloyd presented Chief Craig Bellamy with the department’s perpetual plaque, engraved with honorees dating back to 2011.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to recognize Officer Weir’s outstanding service, along with the other honorees celebrated today. Whether new to the badge or serving for more than two decades, each officer honored exemplifies the values of their communities and the Optimist Creed.

Thank you, Officer Weir, for your dedication to keeping West Des Moines safe.

UPDATE: Carlos has been found. He is fine and he is safe.

We are looking for this 13 year old boy. He was last seen in the 2300 block of Pleasant around 4:00 pm this afternoon. His name is Carlos. He was last seen wearing a red short sleeve shirt, grey/black shorts and carrying a black backpack. He is about 5 feet tall and weighs around 90 pounds.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Westcom dispatch at (515) 222-3321 or their local law enforcement agency.
