What may seem like an empty shell can play an important role in the environment. Shells, corals, and other rubble provide homes for hermit crabs, shelter for small marine organisms, and a source of calcium that helps maintain healthy beach ecosystems. By leaving 'Paradise in its Place,' visitors and residents alike can help preserve the natural beauty and ecological health of the U.S. Virgin Islands for future generations.

The Savana Island Restoration Project is focused on protecting and restoring one of the U.S. Virgin Islands' most important wildlife habitats. Through invasive species management, habitat restoration, and long-term conservation planning, the project aims to improve nesting, breeding, and foraging opportunities for native birds, reptiles, and marine life. By enhancing ecosystem health and resilience, the restoration effort will help ensure that Savana Island remains a thriving sanctuary for wildlife and a valuable natural resource for future generations. Thanks to the partnership between the Division of Fish and Wildlife, Island Conservation, and the Inter-Island Ocean Challenge, this work is happening NOW!
