Greece is a fascinating country with a history that has shaped much of the modern world. Here are 10 interesting facts about Greece:
1. The Cradle of Western Civilization
Greece is widely considered the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, and literature. It also gave the world the Olympic Games, political science, and major mathematical principles.
2. A Land of Sunshine
Greece is one of the sunniest countries in the world. It enjoys an average of more than 250 days of sunshine per year. Some islands, like Rhodes, boast over 300 sunny days annually!
3. Thousands of Islands
While the exact number varies, Greece is made up of between 1,200 and 6,000 islands. However, only about 200 of them are actually inhabited.
4. No Spot is Far from the Sea
Because of its unique geography and jagged coastline, no point in Greece is more than 137 kilometers (about 85 miles) away from the ocean.
5. Ancient Olive Trees
Greece is the world's leading producer of edible olives. Some olive trees planted in the 13th century are still producing fruit today, showing the incredible longevity of these trees.
6. Archaeological Abundance
Greece has more archaeological museums than any other country in the world. From the Acropolis in Athens to the ruins of Delphi, history is literally everywhere you look.
7. One of the Oldest Languages
The Greek language is one of the oldest written languages still in use today. It has been spoken for over 3,000 years, making it an incredible link to the ancient world.
8. The First Olympics
The first Olympic Games took place in 776 BC in Olympia. While the games were originally a religious festival to honor Zeus, they laid the foundation for the global sporting event we know today.
9. It’s Mostly Mountains
Contrary to the popular image of just flat beaches, about 80% of Greece is mountainous. Mount Olympus, the highest peak, was believed to be the home of the Twelve Olympian Gods.
10. The "Hellenic Republic"
While we call it "Greece," the official name of the country is the Hellenic Republic. Greeks usually refer to their country as "Hellas" or "Ellada."
