Yesterday, a number of staff and friends from Livingstone City Council gathered in a small but heartfelt farewell celebration for Mrs. Chiluwa Kancheya Banda, fondly known as "Mrs. B", as she marked her last day of work before retirement.
Mrs. Banda joined Livingstone City Council in 2004 as a Stenographer before being promoted to Personal Secretary in 2012 and later to Personal Assistant in 2017. In 2020, she was transferred to Choma Municipal Council where she continued serving as Personal Assistant. In 2021, she was promoted and transferred back to Livingstone City Council as Senior Committee Clerk, a position she diligently served in until her retirement.
Over the course of 22 years in Local Government Service, Mrs. Banda distinguished herself through her professionalism, commitment, loyalty and dedication to duty. Along the way, she built lasting friendships and earned the respect and admiration of many colleagues who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Today, as she celebrates her 60th birthday and begins a well-deserved retirement, we celebrate not only her years of dedicated service but also the warmth, kindness and friendship she shared with so many.
Thank you for your service, Mrs. B. Your contribution to the Council and the memories you leave behind will be cherished for years to come.
We wish you good health, happiness and God's abundant blessings in this new chapter of life.
Happy 60th Birthday and Happy Retirement, Mrs. B! ๐๐

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION MEETING ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN LIVINGSTONE
12/06/2026
Livingstone City Council today held a community consultation meeting on solid waste management with Ward Development Committees from all wards and other key stakeholders.
The meeting was officiated by Town Clerk Ms. Sombo Kawilila. Also in attendance were the Director of Public Health, Assistant Director Public Health, Assistant Director Engineering, Chief Health Inspector, Town Planner, and other council officers from different departments.
The aim was to find practical ways of managing waste across Livingstoneโs wards, from households and markets to schools and public spaces.
*Why Proper Waste Management Matters*
*1. Protects Public Health*
Uncollected waste attracts flies, rats, and mosquitoes. It blocks drains and spreads diseases like cholera, malaria, and diarrhea. Proper collection and disposal keeps families safe, especially children.
*2. Prevents Flooding*
Most blocked drainages in Livingstone are caused by plastic bottles, food packs, and household waste dumped carelessly. When drains flow, roads last longer and homes stay dry during the rainy season.
*3. Keeps Our Tourism City Clean*
Livingstone is Zambiaโs tourism capital. Dirty streets and illegal dump sites damage the cityโs image and hurt businesses that depend on visitors. A clean city protects jobs in hotels, lodges, markets, and tour operations.
*4. Creates Opportunities*
Waste can be a resource. Organic waste can be composted for gardens. Plastics and bottles can be recycled. With community buy-in, waste management can create jobs for youth and income for womenโs groups in every ward.
*5. Itโs a Shared Responsibility*
The Town Clerk emphasized that the Council cannot do it alone. WDCs know their wards best. Residents must bag waste properly, use designated collection points, and stop illegal dumping. Shops must comply with _Clean Friday_ hours. When every household plays its part, the whole city benefits.
*Way Forward*
The meeting agreed that ward-level solutions are key. WDCs will work with Public Health and Engineering departments to map hotspots, strengthen collection schedules, and run community sensitization. Stakeholders pledged support for recycling and clean-up initiatives.
*Bottom line*: Proper waste management is about health, safety, dignity, and development. The Livingstone we want starts with how we handle waste today.
Livingstone City Council โ Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy.
